Major Carter H. Lilly, age 78, United States Air Force retired. Born October 15, 1933 and his final flight lifted off on Good Friday, April 6, 2012. He was a graduate of Worthington High School and The Ohio State University with majors in Organ performance and Military Science. He served our country in the United States Air Force as a navigator of KC135 tankers, refueling bombers and fighters for Strategic Air Command during the Cold War and in Vietnam. He taught celestial navigation in SAC flight school and spent a second career in Lazarus Department Store selling Steinway pianos and fine carpeting. He was the organist and choirmaster of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Mentor, Ohio; and assistant organist at Trinity Episcopal Church, Columbus. He cared deeply for his family and his country. He significantly supported the disadvantaged and needy. He served his church faithfully and he was an excellent clergy spouse. He treated everyone with dignity and wonderful good humor. He will be greatly missed by his wife of almost fifty seven years, The Rev. Dr. Elizabeth Lilly; daughter, Sue (Robert) Newell; grandchildren, Brian and Alyssa Newell, Marie (Keith) Duty. Steve Rainer, Codi and Corianne Blevins; great-grandchildren, Honey Marie and Billie Ray Morrison, Marianne Watkins, Isabella and Logan Parent and Keith Duty, Jr.; sister, Joan (Conrad) Gongwer and by his Godmother, Eloise Allison. His funeral service will be held Saturday, April 14, 2012, 10:30 am at Trinity Episcopal Church, 125 E. Broad Street, Columbus, Ohio. A neighborhood gathering of family and friends will follow at 1:30 pm at the family home.
